Day 15 July 3, 2010

Sunny, 77 degrees. We have only had an hour of rain in over 100 hours of cycling so far on our trip. We had a wonderful day today. We entered into Wyoming around noon and pedaled another 45 miles to the town of Kemmerer. It is the home of the first J.C. Penney Store. Finally a wind shift to the NNW. We made significant miles today, 81 miles in eight hours. It could have been even more significant but we climbed in elevation to 7,000 feet. I remember reading that when you move to a higher altitude, there is less oxygen in the air. This is because oxygen molecules are rather heavy and tend to sit at lower altitudes. To compensate for the lack of oxygen your body will increase breathing to keep the same level of oxygen in the blood. We noticed this yesterday with a strenuous day of headwinds. We were sucking air!

So for someone from DeFuniak Springs, Florida, they might be a little less energetic or slightly light headed when engaging in strenuous activity in area above 5280.
(5280 feet in a mile). (NFL players complain about playing at Denver Mile High Stadium. However, our bodies have acclimated rather quickly to the new altitude. In the next 2-3 days we will rise to over 9,000 feet.

Wyoming is the 10th largest state in he USA but it is the least populous (490,000)!
